Trees is constructed by layering history and representation, the memory of the colony, its present, its traces, and the way in which Spain, without having come to terms with its own past and having relegated it to oblivion, faces a profound crisis rooted in its relationship with its memory and its historical construction. Divided into two main segments, one dedicated to Guinea in color and the other to Spain—or more precisely, footage shot in Guinea and footage shot in Spain—in black and white, the film employs various resources to stage the variety of approaches that intersect within it: historical texts inserted as intertitles, images filmed in present-day Equatorial Guinea, voices of Guineans, a black-and-white journey through a newly built neighborhood in Spain, and a conversation between three young people about the political moment, the upheavals caused by the 15M movement and its various echoes, Bubi stories about the Spanish colonial presence in Equatorial Guinea, and anonymous stories from the residential “colonies” inhabited on the outskirts of Spanish cities.
